The Smuggler was built in 1877 by Daniel Poland Jr. and Charles C. Woodbury in Glouchester, MA.

Detailed documentation on this schooner doesn't exist, but because she was small compared to schooners built for halibut, cod and haddock fishing, it's likely she worked primarily as a mackerel seiner, and probably laid up in winter.
