This scratch-built model of the Amistad was completed in May of 2001. The method of construction is plank on bulkhead and the materials are predominantly basswood and mahogany.

This model was included in Mystic Seaport's annual International Marine Art Exhibition in 2002.

Amistad was launched in March of 2000, and is the first ship built from the keel up by Connecticut's Mystic Seaport. It is presently homeported in New Haven, CT and is used as a floating classroom.

The original Amistad was a ship commandeered by slaves in 1839 and the Amistad incident was the inspiration for the recent motion picture of the same name. You can learn more about the ship and the history at the Amistad web site. (This link will open in a separate window)
